History
Within a short drive of Carnmhor Bed and Beakfast you can soak up the deep-rooted history of this wonderful
land and its people.
Close
to home, get to know how the Highlander lived in times gone by at
the excellent Highland Folk Museum with 2 sites, one in Newtonmore
and the other in Kingussie. There's also Ruthven Barracks just outside
Kingussie, built by General Wade after the 1715 uprising to control
the rebellious Scots.
Also not to be missed is Culloden Battlefield (The site of the
last battle fought on British soil and a very, very special place
indeed) and close by it's also worth a visit to the well-preserved
Bronze Age burial site at Clava Cairns.
There's also Urquhart Castle , with its excellent newly opened
Visitor Centre and, nearby, we mustn't forget historic Nessie. The
Castle and the " Nessie Village " of Drumnadrochit are 80 to 90
minutes drive from here through some lovely scenery.
Why not make your trip to Urquhart Castle and Loch Ness circular
by travelling south to Newtonmore, then on the A86 to Spean Bridge,
the A82 north past Loch Ness to Inverness and the A9 back to
Aviemore from Inverness. En route, you can also stop off for a few minutes at the Commando
Memorial at Spean Bridge - a very moving experience.
Heading south, a short drive takes you to the Pass of Killiecrankie
, the site of a famous battle in 1689 and of some excellent walks
nowadays.
Another couple of miles takes you to Pitlochry, location for the
famous Festival Theatre, a lovely evening out and not too far to
drive back here afterwards.
A little further south, near Dunkeld, there's The Hermitage, with
a wild 'tree garden', two romantic 'follies' and a short nature
trail through varied woodland containing Britain 's tallest tree,
a stately Douglas fir 212 feet (64.5 metres) high.
